A total eclipse over water, painted straight on: a black disc with a spiked yellow corona, hanging in a grey storm sky. And then the thing that makes the picture — the corona leaks. A thread of molten yellow runs down out of the bottom of the sun, falls the full height of the canvas, and lands in the sea below, where it coils into a loose knot of light on the surface.
It is not how an eclipse behaves, which is the point. The painting treats the sun as something that can pour, and the water as somewhere it can land.
Monogrammed lower right. John Heaver is a self-taught painter living in Yorkshire, who works between landscape and surrealism.
