The most graphic work in the collection, and the only one that looks designed rather than painted. A black ground, worked over until it holds scratches and comb-marks, and on it four shapes in gold: a wide ring, a smaller solid disc in the top left, and two arcs crossing at the lower right. Nothing else.

The gold is dragged rather than laid flat, so the ring catches light unevenly and reads as metal rather than paint. Hung against a pale wall it behaves like a sign.

Dario Borelli was born in Rome in 1969 and trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. He has lived and worked in Switzerland since 2007, currently in Lucerne.
