eclipse-in-the-emporda
ECLIPSE IN THE EMPORDÀ

Seen from above, a coastal town drawn street by street in black and burnt sienna: blocks, roundabouts, a promenade edging the shore, and a pale line winding in from the top left to meet the town at its far end. Below it, the sea is worked into long combed strokes. And high in the dark sky, small and exact, the ring of an eclipse.

It starts from La Fosca, on the coast at Palamós — not set down as a survey, but rebuilt with a cartographer's patience until the place becomes a drawing of itself.

It is made in ink and bleach on Arches 300gsm paper, which is why the light behaves the way it does here: the pale passages have been lifted out of the black rather than laid on top of it. The whites are an absence, not an addition.

The rest is done by scale. The town is drawn street by street — you can pick out individual blocks, the roundabouts along its spine, the dense older quarter at one end — while the thing happening above it is a few centimetres wide. That is roughly the proportion in which an eclipse actually arrives: enormous, and barely there.

On 2 August 2027 a total solar eclipse crosses Spain.

Ink and bleach on Arches 300gsm paper, 2026. 75 × 56 cm.
